Mempis Design
Memphis is the great cultural phenomenon of the 80s that revolutionized creative and commercial logics
in design. Born from the idea of Ettore Sottsass and a group of young designers and architects, in Milan, coupled in the years by famous designers from the international scene, it turned upside down all of the existing parameters on living. Ettore Sottsass as the backbone of the group, design gained a new concept
and expression through new shapes, materials and patterns, expanding the creative limits of the industry. Memphis became a symbol of New Design. Its influence is still clear in various sectors of production and beyond. It named for the Bob Dylan song "Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again," which
played repeatedly at the meeting which marked the group's founding.
Memphis was well known for their use of bright colors, geometric shapes and bold patterns. My work is an exploration of Memphis design and reflective of my interest of the 80s art patterns that is seen as a trend in graphic design today. The bright colors, layering style and overall modern twists create a theme that has become a trend in graphic design, clothing, music and interiors.
This series of poster about Islam as a religion, incorporated with Memphis pattern style, represents
current issues that Muslims people are facing. Negative views, specifically with Muslim women, reveal discrimination, prejudice, and public misconceptions about Islam. It is disheartening how the world is looking
and thinking about Islam these days. Perhaps seeing messages about this concern through the expression of pop, bright, geometric shape, material and pattern can create a twist in perception.
